Planning a 14-day adventure through Negombo, Sigiriya, Ella, Haputale, Yala National Park, Weligama and Galle? Sri Lanka offers an amazing mix of ancient history, scenic mountain journeys, wildlife safaris and beautiful beaches.
For two people travelling with two suitcases, my recommendation is to combine a private car with local tuk-tuks and taxis. This gives you comfort on longer journeys while keeping your trip flexible when exploring towns and beaches.
Which transport option is best?
Ideal for travelling between Negombo, Sigiriya, Ella, Haputale, Yala and the south coast. You can keep your luggage safely in the vehicle, stop for photographs and visit attractions along the way.
Tip: Ask whether the price includes fuel, driver’s accommodation, parking, waiting time and any overnight charges.
Great for short journeys around Sigiriya, Ella, Haputale, Weligama and Galle. They’re fun, convenient and useful for visiting nearby attractions.
Tip: Two suitcases may not fit comfortably, so arrange luggage storage at your accommodation and agree on the fare before departing.
Useful for airport transfers and shorter trips where app-based services are available. Availability can vary in smaller towns and rural areas, so don’t rely on an app for every journey.
Tip: Confirm the vehicle can accommodate both passengers and their luggage before booking.
If you’d love to experience Sri Lanka’s famous hill country railway, consider a train ride between Ella and Haputale, or on another suitable section of your route.
Tip: Check the current timetable, reserve seats where possible and arrange separate transport for your suitcases if needed.
Transport tips for your exact itinerary
Negombo → Sigiriya
A private car is the easiest option, particularly after arriving at the airport. You can travel directly to your accommodation without worrying about your suitcases on buses.
These are long, winding journeys through the island’s interior and hill country. A private driver is practical. Use local tuk tuks for short sightseeing trips, and check current train services if you want to include a scenic rail journey.
Arrange your transfer in advance. For your safari, book a suitable safari jeep and confirm the pickup time with your accommodation or safari operator.
A private transfer is convenient after your safari. Along the south coast, tuk-tuks and app-based rides can be useful for beach visits, restaurants and short trips. Keep a car arranged for your final journey to Negombo.
Important tips for November
-
Book transport early: November is a popular travel period, and rain can affect journey times.
-
Avoid overloading your schedule: Mountain roads are slower than they look on a map.
-
Confirm luggage space: Ask for a proper car boot that can accommodate two suitcases and two passengers comfortably.
-
Download PickMe: It can be useful in areas with available drivers, but coverage is less dependable in remote locations.
-
Keep a flexible itinerary: Allow extra time for rain, road conditions and wildlife activities.
A suggestion from YMe Tours
For this itinerary, I’d choose a private car and driver for the main intercity transfers, then use tuk tuks locally. If your budget allows, hiring the car for the whole trip gives you extra flexibility and means you don’t need to arrange a new driver at each destination.
