TRAVELLING TO SRI LANKA FOR THE FIRST TIME?

Sri Lanka may look like a small island, but it offers an incredible variety of experiences — golden beaches, misty mountains, wildlife safaris, ancient temples, tea plantations, waterfalls, adventure and vibrant local culture.

Before you pack your bags, here are some useful tips to make your journey smoother:

1. Check the weather for the region you’re visiting
Sri Lanka has different weather patterns across the island. One coast can be sunny while another is experiencing rain, so plan your route according to the season.

2. Pack for different environments
Light clothing is perfect for the tropical areas, but take a light jacket for the cool hill country. If you’re hiking, bring proper shoes and rain protection.

3. Respect local culture
When visiting temples and religious places, dress modestly, remove your shoes where required and behave respectfully. Be particularly careful when photographing Buddhist statues and murals.

4. Keep some Sri Lankan Rupees with you
Cards are accepted at many hotels, restaurants and larger shops, but smaller businesses and local travel may require cash. Carrying smaller notes can also make everyday purchases easier.

5. Don’t underestimate travel time
Sri Lanka is relatively small, but mountain roads, traffic and winding routes can make journeys longer than they appear on a map. Sometimes the journey itself becomes one of the best parts of the trip!

6. Choose your coast according to the season
Sri Lanka has beaches for different seasons. The southwest coast is generally sunnier and calmer from November to March, while the east coast can be a better choice during other periods.

7. Prepare for adventure
Planning to hike, surf, snorkel, dive or go on safari? Bring suitable clothing, footwear and equipment, and always follow local safety instructions.

8. Stay hydrated
Sri Lanka is tropical and can be hot and humid. Carry drinking water, especially when exploring outdoors.

9. Plan your accommodation early during busy periods
Popular hotels and destinations can become busy during peak travel periods, so booking ahead can give you more choices.

10. Check your entry requirements before flying
Visa and entry requirements can change, so always check the latest official information before your journey. Sri Lanka Tourism provides current visa and “Before You Go” information.

Most importantly, don’t try to see everything in one trip.

Take time to experience Sri Lanka — taste the food, talk to local people, ride the train, walk through tea plantations, watch the sunset, explore ancient temples and discover places beyond the usual tourist route.

Sri Lanka isn’t just a destination. It’s an experience waiting to be discovered.
